Online Reviews for Small Businesses

One thing any small business can never get enough of is online reviews. 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as they would personal recommendations, which just so happens to be the current most trustworthy and credible source for information about a business/product. On top of that, 73% of customers gain a business’ trust after reading an average of seven reviews and a whopping 57% of customers visit a business’ website after reading positive reviews. The takeaway here should be that businesses in today’s market need to have plenty of positive online reviews if they want to traffic potential customers to their website and have them make purchases of their products/services.

However, getting online reviews can be difficult. It can be hard to motivate even the most enthusiastic customer/client to sit down and take the time to go online, look up your business, decide what to say, and then write it out. Even after a client/customer agrees to write a review online—and is genuinely excited about it—it can still be difficult to get them to remember to do it. Especially because you don’t want to be pushy or annoying about them doing your business a favor. 

One of our clients, Corbin & Co. was thinking about this. He knew that he wanted to increase the number of online reviews out there for his business before the end of the year, but didn’t want to trouble any of his valued clients about it, he knew he had to make it fun and engaging! We took Corbin’s goal seriously and created a campaign to make it happen. The campaign’s structure had worked for Corbin in the past and has a good track record. Due to its success, we decided to share it so other small businesses struggling to gain online reviews could also benefit from it. 

Our Campaign to Gain Online Reviews 

To gain more online reviews for our client we created a contest and publicized it through social media posts that we shared across all Corbin’s channels. This was also coupled with an email campaign we sent to his database announcing the contest as well. 

We called it, ‘Corbin’s yearly review contest.‘ A name were big fans of since it keeps the goal of the campaign right there in the title. 

Now, to be clear, this wasn’t a contest for who could leave the best review, it was a contest clients would automatically be entered into for simply just writing a review online. 

To break it down for you, the post for the review contest went a little bit like this: 

After the review contest ran its course, our client announced the winners via a video post on his social media and an email sent out to his subscribers.

The Results of the Contest Campaign to Gain Online Reviews 

All in all, we were hugely thrilled with the landslide of online reviews that resulted for our client, Corbin.

The review contest resulted in:

🔴 A total of 41 NEW online reviews for our client. 

🔹Total google reviews before: 52

🔹Total google reviews after: 86

🔹Total fb reviews before: 71

🔹Total fb reviews after: 78

🔴A total of 50 NEW followers on Facebook and Instagram, with a total of 64 NEW followers 

🔹Facebook Page Likes at start: 6314

🔹Facebook Page Likes at end: 6364

🔹Instagram followers at start: 1274

🔹Instagram followers at end: 1288

🔴 AND (as a side bonus) 50 comments left on the original contest posts. Keeping our client’s online audience engaged and continuing to feel like a part of a community. 

Using the review contest as a campaign to increase online reviews turned out to be a recipe for success. And we hope it can deliver a similar outcome for you and your business!
