Twitter (X) Goes Down: Elon Musk Claims a 'Massive Cyberattack'

On Monday, thousands of users found themselves unable to access X (formerly Twitter), with widespread outages affecting both the app and website. Reports flooded in early in the morning, with a significant spike at 6 a.m. Eastern and another at 10 a.m., according to Downdetector.com. The situation escalated further at noon, with a sustained outage lasting at least an hour. The hardest-hit areas appeared to be along the U.S. coasts.

In response to the disruptions, Elon Musk took to his own platform to address the issue, alleging that X had been the target of a "massive cyberattack." He explained, "We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …"

Downdetector's data indicated that 56% of the reported issues stemmed from the X app, while 33% were tied to the website. Users struggled to load posts, refresh feeds, and even log in, leaving many frustrated.

This isn't the first time X has faced widespread technical difficulties. In March 2023, when the platform was still known as Twitter, users encountered similar disruptions, including broken links, login failures, and missing images. These recurring issues have raised concerns about the platform's stability under Musk's leadership and the company's ongoing operational challenges.

Alternatives to X (Twitter) for Social Media Users

If you're looking for other platforms to stay connected when X is down—or if you're considering a switch—here are some strong alternatives:

  1. Threads – Meta’s response to X, offering a similar experience with a more stable infrastructure.

  2. Bluesky – A decentralized alternative backed by Twitter’s former CEO, Jack Dorsey.

  3. Mastodon – An open-source, community-driven platform with a unique, federated network structure.

As X continues to face technical and security challenges, users may need to explore these alternatives to ensure uninterrupted communication and engagement. Whether Musk’s claims of a massive cyberattack hold weight or not, one thing is clear—social media users need a backup plan.
