Instagram’s New Live Map Feature: What You Need to Know

Instagram just rolled out a new way to stay connected with friends: the Instagram Map. This feature lets you see where your friends are sharing content and, if you choose, share your own location with the people you trust. It’s designed to make Instagram feel a little more connected to the real world - without forcing you to give up privacy (in theory).

How Location Sharing Works

Location sharing on Instagram is opt-in only - meaning it’s off by default. If you decide to turn it on, you have full control over who can see your location. During testing of this feature; users reported it was ON by default; but that is unconfirmed.

You can share with:

  • All of your friends (followers you follow back)

  • Close Friends

  • A custom list of selected friends

  • Or no one at all

You can also block location sharing in specific places or with certain people. When turned on, your location updates whenever you open or return to the app, but you can switch it off anytime.

For parents, Instagram has added extra controls for teens with supervised accounts. Parents will be notified if their teen turns on location sharing, and they’ll be able to see who the teen is sharing with.

What You’ll See on the Map

Even if you choose not to share your location, you can still explore the map to see content from friends and creators. For example, you might:

  • Watch stories from friends at a concert

  • Discover reels tagged from a local café

  • Find fun spots shared by your favorite creators

Any post, reel, story, or note with a tagged location can appear on the map. Content is available for 24 hours after it’s posted.

Where to Find the Map

You’ll find the Instagram map right at the top of your DM inbox. It’s currently rolling out in the US, with global availability coming soon.

What do you think? Is this another feature no one asked for; or will people actually use this one? I personally have it turned off for safety concerns - but would be inclined to try it once it has all the bugs worked out.
