Breaking Through the Noise: What the 8 of Swords Taught Me About Focus

I’ll be honest—getting focused has been really hard lately.

Maybe it’s the energy of the world, the uncertainty that seems to be hanging in the air, or maybe (and let’s be real here) it’s the fact that I’ve neglected my ADHD meds for a bit. I know, I know.

So instead of pulling a tarot card for the usual open-ended “What’s the energy today?” I decided to ask something specific—something I truly needed guidance on:

"What do I need to know about breaking through the noise so I can focus?"

And the answer? The 8 of Swords.

At first glance, this card can feel heavy. It represents feeling trapped, stuck in a situation where you think you have no control. But as I looked closer, I realized how deeply it resonated.

The Invisible Cage

In the imagery of this deck, the 8 of Swords shows a rusty cage with an invisible prisoner inside. Behind it, two intertwined snakes—at first glance, they might seem threatening, but they actually represent transformation.

It made me think: How often do we fixate on what’s blocking us instead of looking for a way out? How often do we focus so much on our own perceived limitations that we fail to notice the door was never locked in the first place?

The Shift in Perspective

The message of this card was clear:

🔑 The bars in front of you aren’t the full picture. Look up. There’s a way out.
🐍 Transformation comes from within. It’s time to reclaim your energy.
💡 When you stop feeding the story of limitation, you free yourself.

For me, this was a wake-up call. I’ve been feeling paralyzed, overwhelmed by my endless to-do list, and struggling to start. But the 8 of Swords reminded me that the only thing keeping me stuck was where I was placing my attention.

Instead of spiraling in frustration, today I’m making a conscious choice to move forward—one small, intentional action at a time. Because sometimes, the way to break through the noise isn’t by forcing clarity, but by shifting focus and trusting that the next step will reveal itself.

My Top 5 Ways to Get Unstuck When I Feel Like I Can’t Even Start

If you’ve ever been in that staring-at-the-screen-but-doing-nothing state, you know how frustrating it can be. Here are five things that actually help me when I feel frozen:

1️⃣ The 5-Minute Rule – Tell yourself you’ll work on something for just five minutes. If after five minutes you still can’t focus, you can stop. (Spoiler: Once you start, you usually keep going.)

2️⃣ Change Your Environment – If I’m stuck, I move to a different space, go outside, or even just switch up my playlist. A fresh environment can reset your brain.

3️⃣ Brain Dump + Prioritize – I take a blank page and spill out every single thought in my head. Then, I highlight just one thing I can tackle first. Overwhelm thrives in chaos—clarity starts with a plan.

4️⃣ Movement First, Work Second – When my brain refuses to cooperate, I go for a walk, do a few stretches, or even just dance around the kitchen for two minutes. Physical movement shakes up mental blocks.

5️⃣ Set a “Messy First Draft” Goal – Perfectionism is a motivation killer. Instead of aiming for a polished final product, I tell myself to create the worst possible first version. It removes the pressure and gets the ideas flowing.

Your Takeaway: Finding Clarity in Business

As entrepreneurs, we all have moments where we feel trapped—stuck in our business, overwhelmed by decisions, or unsure which direction to take next. But what if the solution isn’t as complicated as we make it out to be?

Here’s what I want you to ask yourself today:

✨ Where in my business (or life) do I feel stuck?
✨ What happens when I shift my focus from the obstacle to the opportunity?

Whether it’s tackling that long-overdue website update, showing up online more consistently, or finally launching the offer you’ve been sitting on—remember, the bars in front of you aren’t as solid as they seem.

You’ve got the control. You’ve got the smarts. You’ve got the passion. And just like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, you’ve had the power all along. You just have to take the first step.

What’s one small action you can take today to shift out of stuck energy? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear.
